Although this specific charity is in the United States, cancer knows no borders. There are around 309,500 new cases of cancer (excluding non-melanoma skin cancer) diagnosed each year in the UK, and more than 1 in 4 people will develop some form of cancer during their lifetime. Today, in America about 1,638,910 new cancer cases are expected to be diagnosed in 2012 and about 577,190 Americans are expected to die of cancer, more than 1,500 people a day. However, worldwide these figures increase phenomenally.
According to research undertaken by GLOBOCAN nearly 12.7 million new cancer cases were diagnosed worldwide in 2008. Worldwide around 7.6 million deaths from cancer occurred in 2008. Four years on these numbers are on the rise and will only continue to do so. Research into cancer and cancer related diseases are essential.
