Generous Gift Allows Beaumont to Open the First Women’s Urology Center in Michigan

A generous $5 million gift from Susan E. Cooper recently established a Women’s Urology Center at Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak. The center is the first of its kind in the Midwest dedicated exclusively to treatment and research of urological conditions such as incontinence, pelvic pain and sexual dysfunction.

“The intent of my gift is to create another important women’s health destination at Beaumont. The Women’s Urology Center expands the range of female health care services provided by Beaumont Hospitals. I am gratified to provide such a center for women,” says Susan Cooper.

The center has been specially designed for our patients, including seating specifically suited for women with urological conditions, soothing décor that is conducive to healing and eco-friendly, and "green" design elements, such as recycled and recyclable materials.  The impact on patients will be measurable –  diminished pain, improved quality of life, a better understanding of conditions and symptoms, options for treatment; including innovative treatments and therapies only available at Beaumont; and a holistic approach to care – are just a few of the benefits of this transformational center.

Children's Miracle Network Supports Beaumont Programs

Beaumont Children's Hospital is proud to be a member of the Children's Miracle Network - a national alliance of premier hospitals for children. One of Children's Miracle Network's founding commitments is to keep funds within the community in which they are generated. 100% of the donations raised in Southeast Michigan stay here in our community to fund exceptional pediatric programs and services, vital pediatric equipment and provide treatment scholarships for families unable to afford care.

Beaumont depends on community support to help fund these vital services. Special events and grassroots fund raisers are conducted year-round through a coalition of corporate sponsors, media partners and local businesses working together to ensure healthy kids in our community.

The following are some of the initiatives that were made possible with the invaluable support of Children's Miracle Network:

  • Beaumont Healthy Kids Program
  • Bedside Computers
  • Children's Miracle Network Garden
  • Pediatric Rehabilitation Annual Bike Day
  • Safety City
  • Parenting Program

Philanthropy Impacts Surgical Learning at Beaumont

Surgical Learning CenterA gift from Marcia & Eugene Applebaum enabled Beaumont to open The Marcia & Eugene Applebaum Surgical Learning Center in 2006. The Center provides national leadership and training to health care providers by shifting the learning curve for surgical procedures and technologies out of the operating room and into the simulation laboratory while, at the same time, improving patient safety and outcomes.

The Applebaum Center further advances Beaumont's reputation as a leader in surgical care. It affords greater access to new discoveries, technology and treatment in a secure, realistic environment. With its unique blend of classroom learning, hands-on simulation training and distance learning, the Applebaum Center captures the essence of the operating room experience.

The Applebaum's generous gift has enabled the Center to leverage over $5.3 million in additional gifts and grants since 2007, to become one of only 10 centers in North America accredited by the American College of Surgeons and one of only fourteen hospitals in the country with the credentials to be a multi-specialty training center for robotic surgery.
