Donations in support of orthopedic research help save lives
You may be surprised to learn that Beaumont Health System has a highly acclaimed orthopedic research program, and we’re developing leading-edge therapies for improved healing.
Beaumont’s orthopedic surgeons and researchers continually revise approaches to joint replacements and other methods of restoring function through unwavering research. Right now, we are working on a groundbreaking development of “scaffold materials” that can be used to help re-grow bone instead of replacing it with metals and ceramics.
Adult stem cells from the patient’s own body are placed on the scaffold and then placed into an incubator that simulates the body’s environment. The scaffold acts like a bridge for bone to grow on, thus enhancing rapid growth. It is then surgically implanted and will be reabsorbed into the body once the damaged bone is regenerated. This amazing development will result in much less pain for the patient.
This is just one example of how we are improving lives. As you can imagine, the equipment used in this type of groundbreaking research is very expensive. The “tissue bioreactor” (incubator to grow the scaffolding materials) costs $126,000 and we are in need of a new one.
Your donation can assist Beaumont’s orthopedic surgeons improve the quality of life of our patients by relieving pain and restoring function to bones and joints damaged by disease, trauma and degeneration. Your support can even save lives.
