The Impact of Philanthropy

On December 31, 2011, The Beaumont Foundation successfully completed The Campaign for Beaumont Hospitals, raising more than $206 million for programs and services across the Beaumont Health System.

Early in the campaign, we worked closely with Beaumont medical and administrative leaders to identify critical needs for capital, research, program and endowment funds across the entire system. Six key clinical areas were the focus of our efforts and included:

  • Heart and Vascular
  • Oncology
  • Urology
  • Orthopaedics
  • Geriatrics
  • Pediatrics

Although these six areas were the primary focus of the campaign, the Foundation continued to secure gifts for all clinical areas. Every gift, regardless of size, was greatly appreciated. Gifts were secured through the following Foundation programs: major gifts, annual fund, team giving, corporate and foundation giving, and special events.

Walter Wolpin, a highly respected business leader and member of the Beaumont and Foundation boards, was recruited as campaign chair. Under Walter’s outstanding leadership, Beaumont has been able to not only achieve, but exceed its most ambitious goal. Marilyn & Walter Wolpin also made a significant campaign gift to name the Marilyn & Walter Wolpin Comprehensive Breast Care Center at Royal Oak. Their gift underwrote the renovation and expansion of the facility and also provided funds for breast cancer research.

“We are deeply grateful to Walter for his dedication, guidance and unfailing commitment to this endeavor. A man of integrity, Walter has been the cornerstone of this successful fundraising journey,” said Gene Michalski, president and CEO of Beaumont Health System.  We also want to thank those who graciously served as members of the Campaign Executive Committee: Eugene Applebaum, Susan E. Cooper, Thomas Celani, Graham Orley, Warren Elliott Rose, James I. Rosenthal, Honorable Deborah G. Tyner and S. Evan Weiner.

In the end, we surpassed our campaign goal. The total amount raised was more than $206 million. The impact on patient care has been profound and will continue for generations to come. We gratefully acknowledge the 40 donors who made leadership gifts ranging from $1 million to more than $40 million and the 60,000 additional donors who contributed to this effort. Nearly $2 million of this amount was raised through the Team Giving Campaign and supported a broad range of Beaumont programs and services.
